Follow the journey of Bert and Lily, two English children uprooted from their beloved Liverpool dockside to a life of deprivation and extreme hardship in the alien environment of Australia in the years following World War I.
This poignant and forceful saga uncovers the darker side of the Child Migration Schemes of the 1950s, which was largely swept under the carpet until this series was broadcast in 1992. The massive national and international social controversy that followed climaxed with real-life victims breaking the cone of silence that had enclosed them for nearly half a century.
As the top rating show of 1992, 'The Leaving of Liverpool' won numerous awards including the AFI Award for Most Outstanding Drama and Best Screenplay, TV Week Logie Award for Most Outstanding Mini-Series and the Australian Humanitarian Award.
Directed by Steve Knapman, 'The Leaving of Liverpool' features an outstanding cast including Bill Hunter, John Hargreaves, Martin Jacobs and Frances Barber as well as stellar performances from the lead child actors.
