Greetings From Scarborough DVD - 2011 - Alan Ayckbourn, Alain Renais

Alan Yentob meets the renowned British playwright Alan Ayckbourn in this documentary from the BBC's flagship 'Imagine' strand. Sir Alan Ayckbourn is often described as the world's most performed living playwright. Yet it is his popularity that has often led to him being overlooked as a serious dramatist in the UK. As he premieres his 75th play in his seaside theatre in Scarborough, Imagine sets out to discover why Ayckbourn is so popular, and a chorus of distinguished fans explain why he must be recognised as one of the great dramatists of our time.

The TV drama "Burn Your Phone" was based on Andrew Wallace's original Radio 4 play, in which Alan Cumming originally played the role of Andy. Cumming was so impressed by Wallace's script that he pushed hard for it to be produced as a TV drama.

The screenplay shows its radio basis in focusing heavily on the main character and his reactions to the calls he receives. It's unusual for a TV audience to be asked to imagine off-screen scenarios, but Wallace's script and Cumming's well-judged performance make "Burn Your Phone" a half-hour of very watchable TV drama.

In a revealing feature-length 'Imagine' documentary (around 100 minutes long), Mike Leigh, director of Secrets & Lies, Vera Drake and Abigail's Party among many others, talks to Alan Yentob about a unique body of work and a lifelong struggle to make films on his own terms.

On day one of a Mike Leigh film, there is no script, no story and the actors do not know if they will even be in the final film. It is a process that has yielded some of cinema's most celebrated performances, and Leigh's new film Mr Turner is already winning critical acclaim.

Actors including Jim Broadbent, Eddie Marsan, Sally Hawkins, Lesley Manville and James Corden give fascinating insights into the director and his distinctive method of working.

Peter Terson 's sharply observed comedy from 1972.

Three Derbyshire miners escape for a weekend's fishing, with the best of intentions. "We ain't pigs. No brown aleing, no being sick over the wall - we'll show our wives we can be civilised without them." Three miners plan a blameless weekend fishing the cod. "We might be rough-and-ready miners on a fishing trip but we're staying at one of them there hotels, you know. Cliff View. Very nice it is. It's got its standards, but we can live up to them.'

It's really a simple tale of innocents abroad, with a touch of comedy of manners. A group of Northern English miners take a fishing holiday on which little goes right, from a snobbish landlady who resents their presence in the guest house to their discovering that the sea isn't really their element.
