Based upon Paul Gallicos delicate novel, Patrick Garland's Golden Globe winning The Snow Goose is a stark and hauntingly beautiful drama set amongst the striking scenery of the Essex salt marshes during the early years of WWII. A bearded Richard Harris leads the modest cast with his sensitive portrayal of tormented soul Philip Rhayader, a lonely misshapen man shunned by society but with a great love of life; Harris isnt overly bitter of his treatment and expresses his compassion through his paintings and love of the waterfowl that surround him. Harris is ably supported by the waiflike Jenny Agutter as Frith, who radiates the requisite amount of youthful innocence and naivety, and won a best supporting actress Emmy Award for her performance.

Set during the late 1930s, Philip Rhayadar (Richard Harris) is a disfigured recluse living in a disused lighthouse on Essexs Great Marsh. Rhayadar is a conservationist who loves the marsh wildfowl and whilst out walking one day encounters Frith (Jenny Agutter), an orphan girl embracing an injured Canadian goose shot by hunters.

Rhayadar takes the injured bird back to his lighthouse where they tend to the animals injuries. He informs Frith that she is the first visitor to his home in years and she replies that the locals warn people off visiting him and thus an unlikely friendship is formed. Soon, winter has passed and the by the spring the fit again goose migrates north leaving behind a heartbroken Frith. For two years Rhayadar saw neither Frith or the goose and loneliness once again descended on his life.

Soon news reaches Rhayadar that the Germans have invaded Poland and that we are at war; he quickly sends off a letter to the local civil defence offering his services to the Observer Corps but is reprehensibly rejected. Meanwhile, after three years of solitude both Frith and the snow goose return to Rhayadars life and bring him a short spell of contentment and happiness, but when the news breaks that the British Expeditionary Force are trapped on the beaches of Dunkirk, Rhayadar seizes his chance to prove himself.

Joe's daughter Lucy is dying from cancer in the room above his pet shop. Neither his profound religious convictions nor his son's humour can prepare them for the shock of bereavement.

The religious beliefs of pet shop owner Joe (Freddie Jones) are shaken by the terminal illness of his daughter Lucy (Angharad Rees). For Potter, this play "makes more than a wry nod at possibilities which can comprehend pain, or disgust, or the implacable presence of death itself

The five Catholic youths in this grim story live in Northern Ireland, surrounded as they are by the armed-camp mentality of their adults. They steal a car for a bit of fun, and when they get back, the local IRA chapter sets out to teach them civic responsibility, IRA-style, by breaking one of gang's fingers. They aren't particularly impressed with this lesson and decide that it's the IRA that needs some lessons. This leads to an ever-increasing scale of confrontations between the reckless youths and various authorities and would-be authorities, leavened only by the youngsters' grim, graveyard humor

Please note this film was filmed using magnetic tape, as it was banned on its release the film was never mass produced and it missed the dvd revolution in 1995 so was never remastered , as such it is NOT DVD/HD quality the quality is that of v.h.s, but that does not take away the fact that this is likely to be one of the best films of its kind you will ever see. A true to life, of historical value mivue, quite violent with a touch of humour, fast cars, you will NOT be dissapointed.

A circus goes to the dogs (or, more accurately, the dogs come to the circus) in this light-hearted action-adventure tale. Lucky Vincent (James Franciscus) is a gambler who, after a stretch of bad luck, owes over $12,000 to mobster Solly Kramer (Jack Carter). Lucky is rescued from Solly's goons by Daniel Hughes (Fred Astaire), a born-again Christian with a team of trained Doberman pinschers. After going undercover at a circus, Lucky persuades Hughes to work up an act with his dogs and join the carnival; when Lucky discovers that Solly and his gang intend to rob an armored car hauling the circus's box office take, Hughes and his canine friends step forward to help thwart the plot. Along the way, Lucky also finds time to make romance with a beautiful circus performer named Justine Pirot (Barbara Eden). The Amazing Dobermans was the second in-name-only sequel to The Doberman Gang, which shared the same director and talented four-footed performers, but none of the same plot points or characters.

A modern take on the familiar Christmas Carol story. Eddie Scrooge is a loan shark on an inner city estate. He brings misery to everyone who knows him, until he's finally shown the error of his ways by the three spirits. Many interesting and clever tropes on the Dickens story, some of which are unique and imaginative. Great performances, especially from Kemp but the entire cast is committed. Among contemporary adaptations, this is one of the best.
